Our game doesn’t happen without officials. By becoming an umpire or technical official, you’re helping create a positive, fair, and enjoyable experience for players of all ages. You’ll gain new skills, be part of a strong community, and play a vital role in hockey’s future. Whether you’re a player, a parent, or just keen to learn, officiating offers flexible opportunities and is a great way to give back to the game you love.
For information on how to get involved as an official, you can express your interest with your club and visit our BECOMING AN OFFICIAL page.
For support and upskilling, please see our RESOURCE HUB and ACCREDITATIONS information. Keep up to date with our social media and events for extra development opportunities.
Coaching is one of the most rewarding ways to be involved in hockey. Whether you’re new to the role or an experienced player, coaching lets you shape positive experiences, develop skills, and inspire a love of the game in others — with plenty of support along the way.
Coaching in hockey comes in many forms, with options to suit different interests, skills, and availability. Express your interest to your club or Hockey SA to find a coaching opportunity to match your passion and experience.

Clubs often require coaches for junior teams (U8s to U18s), senior teams (M6 to PL), school clinics, come and try days and Hookin2Hockey programs. Hockey SA also require coaches for school clinics, holiday activities and pathway programs. Please contact linzi.appleyard@hockeysa.com.au if you're interested in coaching for Hockey SA.
Coaches are required to obtain a Working With Children Check and complete the HockeyED "Safe Hockey - Expected Behaviours" course. Other courses may also be applicable - for example, coaches delivering sessions in schools require a RRHAN-EC. Always check with program organisers for what certificates they require.
Hockey SA's COACHING RESOURCE HUB provides information on technical skills, tactics, safeguarding, coaching theories, learning styles and more. Keep up to date with our social media and events for extra development opportunities.
Coaching accreditations are also offered by Hockey Australia - click here to learn more.
Volunteers are the heart of hockey. From helping on game day to supporting events, committees, and programs, volunteering is a great way to stay connected, develop new skills, and make a real difference in your local community.
The best way to get involved is by chatting directly with your club. Clubs are always on the lookout for people to help with committee roles, casual coaching or officiating, and other program support roles. These positions are often advertised on a club's social media or website. Some opportunites can be found here.
Whether you have lots of experience or none at all, a quick conversation can open the door to opportunities that suit your interests, skills, and availability.
Hockey SA's CLUB RESOURCE HUB provides information on how to best enagage, support and manage volunteers.
