Indigenous Uniform Announcement

Published Fri 03 Jul 2026

As the U18 National Championships get underway in Darwin today, Hockey SA is proud to officially announce our new Indigenous Uniform.

Created by Mya Damon, this away strip will make its debut throughout this championship campaign and will continue to be worn by all Hockey SA State Teams into the future.

This uniform is a celebration of culture, connection and community. Hockey SA is proud to recognise and pay respect to the coaches, managers, players and families who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

New CEO Ben Smith says "We are committed to the vision of a thriving hockey community where everyone can play, connect and succeed and intrinsic to this is the need to pay our respects to the traditional owners and custodians of the land on which we play our great game. We thank Mya for her design and expertise and will wear the uniform with pride when representing all of South Australia."

Artist Statement:

My name is Mya Damon, I am a proud Nyungar-Yamatji woman, with strong connections to the Ballardong, Amangu, and Wudjari People. My family comes from Southwest and Midwest Western Australia. However, I have had the privilege of growing up and learning on the lands of the Nauo, Barngarla and Kaurna peoples.

The piece I have created represents the closeness of strong community ties, that hold Hockey as a sport, along with Hockey SA's core values. The circles represent the diversity across communities and the passion for the sport. This is also reflected through the journey lines, connecting communities. The colours represent the state colours of South Australia.

The kangaroo tracks on the design, honour the Kaurna people's connection to country. Tarndanya (place of the male red kangaroo) is the place name for Adelaide in Kaurna language.

When working with Mya on the design, Hockey SA wanted the uniform to represent every aspect of our state programs and the communities that make it so special.

 Our communities represented are:

U14s, U16s, U18s, U21s, Country Men, Country Women, Indoor & Masters. The two meeting places inside the flowing river pay homage to our metropilitan copmetition, the two communites & meeting places represent the 8 premier league clubs.

Additionally, The flowing river draws inspiration from Yartapuulti, Port Adelaide's river & surrounding wetlands.
